Presentation by Dr. Grace Parraga
“Reviewing Manuscripts: More art than science”
In this invited lecture I will provide an overview of my tips and tricks for manuscript review.I review about 2 manuscripts/month for Radiology, Academic Radiology, Journal of Applied Physiology, AJRCCM and Thorax.
My lab’s work has been extensively published with more than 100 peer-reviewed papers in the last 5 years in the highest impact medical physics, imaging and respiratory/physiology journals; 15 contributions were highlighted in Editorials, Journal Covers or Editorial podcasts because of their significance and impact. My lab is currently funded by the Heart and Stroke Foundation (Canada), Canadian Institutes of Health Research as well as the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (Canada) Discovery, Research Tools and Accelerator awards.
Dr. Grace Parraga’s Bio:
My laboratory is focused on developing a deep understanding of chronic lung disease using novel imaging methods, in patient-based research. The overarching goal of my team’s research is to discover, validate and clinically translate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) biomarkers while generating the evidence to support the clinical use of lung MRI to change asthma and COPD patient outcomes.
I completed my BSc and MSc at Western University and a PhD at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. Upon completing post-doctoral studies (funded by MRC Canada) at the University of Basel, (Switzerland), I joined F. Hoffman La Roche AG as a Scientist in Pharmaceutical Research and Development (Switzerland). In September 2004, I returned to academic research at Robarts Research Institute and Western University.
Hands-on Review Sessions:
During the working sessions, there will be round tables with a facilitator and 5-6 students at each table. The students at each table will be in 2 groups, each one reviewing a paper, either fundamental or clinical, with each student being responsible for generating their own review. The 2 papers for the session will be the same for each table, and will be sent out in advance so the students can prepare their reviews. During the round table, there will be a 30 minute discussion with the facilitator about the reviews that were prepared. Then the facilitators will change tables, providing the students with exposure to different reviewers with different reviewing styles.
