An evening talk at the Florence Nightingale Museum
Lucinda Hawksley, author of Moustaches, Whiskers & Beards, will explore the history of facial hair in portraiture and examine what it was about the Victorian Age that made it so extraordinarily hirsute.
How did Florence Nightingale play her part in changing facial fashion? Why did so many Victorian men sport their facial hair with pride? Come along and hear a self-confessed pogonophobe discuss how the war, the women's movement and celebrities including Charles Dickens brought about a radical change in men's appearances.
Admission price for all talks £8.00 (Members of the Florence Nightingale Museum FREE) and includes a glass of wine and a chance to view the museum. Doors will be open from 6pm, for a 6:30pm start.
This lecture is part of our season of events for 'The Age of the Beard,' an exhibition and series of events generously funded by the Wellcome Trust.
