Ruben ÖstlundSweden, 2011, 118 minutesSwedish, with English sub-titlesBased on a real series of crimes in the director’s hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden, Play follows a group of young boys who use scams and psychological intimidation to rob other boys. Over the course of a day, the bullies encounter three boys who become their hostages, toying with them as they lead them around the city. The film’s naturalistic acting is captured in cold, detached long takes. Östlund’s camera calmly observes as a complex social drama unfolds, provoking vital questions about race and class, social power dynamics and methods of control, apathy, authority and public surveillance, all without providing easy answers. Stunning.Turist (Force Majeure) dir. Ruben ÖstlundSweden, 2014, 118 minutesSwedish, with English sub-titlesNever has a film title been more apt, as Ruben Östlund’s latest, Force Majeure, garnered universal critical praise as it toured the festival circuit. At its core, the film deals with a “crisis of masculinity”. Tomas is on a ski-vacation in the French Alps with his family. When a controlled avalanche goes awry, Tomas, at the last second, grabs his phone and runs from his family. The remainder of the film is equivalent to watching the dust settle, as Tomas’s identity is thrown into contrast, clashing with the societal expectations of masculinity. So, too, must his family re-evaluate the roles they have given to one another. The avalanche analogies abound as Tomas and his family must confront this new emotional weight before it overtakes them. Featuring a score which practically vibrates with tension and cinematography that carefully lays bare the dawning gravity of Tomas’ actions, Ö stlund’s latest suggests that he, too, may be an unstoppable force.
