Steve Hauschildt’s 2016 album Strands pulsed with subtle energy, tracing the architectures of minimal electronic beats with a steady hand. “Saccade,” the Chicago producer's first single from his forthcoming Dissolvi LP (Ghostly International), throws the human voice into the mix courtesy of loop pedal witch Julianna Barwick. The two artists make a great team: While Hauschildt's production tends toward the mathematical and precise, Barwick's reverb-shrouded vocals tend to bleed past the confines of each beat. He offers structure and she floods it with airy texture.
Julianna Barwick:
The voice may be the original instrument, as the groundbreaking experimental singer Joan La Barbara put it, but in Julianna Barwick's music, the voice itself isn't necessarily a point of origin. Layering and looping her often-wordless singing into hypnotic and otherworldly configurations, she enters her songs as though slipping into a stream. The music, she seems to say, precedes us, and it will outlast us; we don't so much carry songs as allow ourselves to be carried along by them, swept up in their current for a little while.
Michael Vallera :
"head-spinning material that evoke the razor-thin liminal space between here and the hereafter." - SPIN
