Reelworld is pleased to present: Drowning in Sands, screening with 19-S The Earth Shouts, and the short film Protecting our Homeland
DROWNING IN SANDS | 31 Minutes | PG | Sudan | English | Famous Players Canada Square Cinema
It drops you right in, into the crisis, and into the sand. The cinematography is stunning. In Sudan, sand is the ultimate destroyer, leaving behind a wasteland after a storm. Nothing can grow and no-one can live. Two Sudanese engineers develop drones for farming which is under threat of desertification. These are men of invention, persevering past terrorist sanctions, and executing agricultural robotics.
SCREENING WITH:
19-S THE EARTH SHOUTS | 55 Minutes | PG | Mexican w/English subtitles | Famous Players Canada Square Cinema
September 2017, two earthquakes in 12 days rocked Mexico. One was the strongest in nearly 100 years. A fast-paced documentary with an incredible assemblage of news and private video footage depicting affected cities. Interweaving historical seismic data through digital imagery provides context about Mexico’s vulnerability to earthquakes. It sits on several of the earth’s plates. Highly educational and visually creative.
SCREENING WITH:
PROTECTING OUR HOMELAND | 4 Minutes | English | Famous Players Canada Square Cinema
This film wants to inspire the young generation to start caring about our lands and culture while raising awareness about the ravages of uranium mining in Patterson Lake, SK.
With the Canadian government’s broken promises of Treaty 10 allowing uranium companies to mine in Patterson Lake, there could be devastating consequences for the workers, the local environment, and the community’s future. Weaving together beautiful footage of the land and frightening testimony of a former miner, director Ashton Janvier asks when enough will be enough.
