“The plot is as follows: birds are tired of being killed, plucked and eaten by mankind, so they decide to avenge themselves. One day, they group together and swoop down on the people's towns and villages.” - Alfred Hitchcock
Released in 1963, at the beginning of a decade that would birth the Civil Rights Movement and the Stonewall Riots. The film’s tag line “They’re Coming! They’re Coming!” can easily be applied to the groups of oppressed communities that were readying themselves for revolution, and the fear middle-class white America held at the time that their simple existence was being attacked.
Many of Hitchcock’s films have been noted for their queerness, from ‘Rope’, based on real life killers/lovers Leopold & Loeb, to the iconic cross-dressing woman hating Norman Bates in ‘Psycho’, however, ‘The Birds’ begs for an equally queer reading
Join Queer Fear as we queer up Hitchcock’s last (and arguably campiest) masterpiece! Featuring our curated pre-show and a performance by our own flock of ‘birds’!
