Description
Ryad Mehry did not let his second chance pass, and on the 19 October 2019, he made history by winning his fight against the #1 WBO boxer, Imre Szello. At the same time, he became the first Belgian interim world cham- pion post World War II.
In January 2021, Ryad Merhy has been officially named regular champion; the Cuban boxer Yuriel Dorticos was designated as his official challenger. The fight between the two must take place before the beginning of June.
Negotiations with Dorticos’ circle are ongoing, and it should be possible to organise this championship fight in Belgium.
It would be the first time that a Belgian champion would defend his title in Belgium!
However, Ryad hasn’t fought in about 15 months. In order to prepare him as best as possible, two exhibition fights will be organised:
The first one at the Dome in Charleroi on the 20 March 2021. The second one in Liège’s Country Hall on the 1st May 2021.
Finally, if everything comes together, the title fight will be organised in Brussels at he beginning of June.
The two exhibition events will be the opportunity for Ryad to get back in form and for us at 12 Rounds to show- case his training partners as we launch project NEX GEN, which aims to shine a light on tomorrow’s champions and restart a recurring project in Charleroi, Liège and Brussels for the coming years.
Our task is made complicated by the COVID 19 pandemic, and the help of the public authorities and private parties will be needed more than ever.
In organising these three events, we hope not only to create a positive and interesting momentum, which would allow us to organise this world championship at home in Belgium, but also to lay the foundation for a continuing work over the next three years.
