You’ve seen DRIVE. You’ve seen BABY DRIVER. Now it’s time to take a joyride through the darkened streets of L.A. with the film that would steal their lunch money if given the chance. This November, Walter Hill’s legendary turbo-charged thriller THE DRIVER speeds through The Royal Cinema for its landmark 40th anniversary.
While owed a substantial debt of gratitude from filmmakers Michael Mann, James Cameron, Quentin Tarantino, Nicolas Winding-Refn, and Edgar Wright (to name a few), THE DRIVER itself pays homage to the films of Robert Bresson and Jean-Pierre Melville (specifically Le Samouraï). Melding quiet brooding attitude with mind-blowing stunts and impossibly cool dialogue, THE DRIVER tells the story of the stoic getaway driver (Ryan O’Neal as “The Driver”), the cop dangerously obsessed with catching him (Bruce Dern as “The Detective”), and the mysterious femme fatale caught in between (Isabelle Adjani as “The Player”).
There are few greater cinematic joys than watching a spectacularly crafted car chase, and THE DRIVER spins one of these after another into a delectable cat-and-mouse thriller. So strap on your seatbelt and join us for a one-night-only presentation of the film that many consider to be the earliest and most stylized examples of neo noir cinema.
This screening and others are made possible thanks to our wonderful sponsor Hollywood Suite. As always this will be a fully licensed event featuring a fabulous on-screen pre-show. Be sure to arrive early!
