The 2020 classes were cut short due to the pandemic - both current and recent alumni of this program will be introduced monthly through this series. With special appreciation to The Music Man Foundation for funding this series.
"The Bill Green Mentorship program was an amazing experience for my development. Being able to play in a constructive setting with other talented musicians my age was invaluable. I was also able to work with musicians such as Scott Whitfield and Roger Newman through this program, which to this day has inspired me. On top of all that, it gave me the opportunity to play at a Los Angeles Jazz club as a high schooler! --- KENTON LUCK
KENTON LUCK is a trombonist and composer from Los Angeles, California. With both parents as music educators, he was exposed to wind ensemble and big band music at an early age. In 2017, he graduated from Thousand Oaks High School and moved across country to develop his small ensemble playing and composition at the University of Miami, Frost School of Music. Kenton was accepted into the LAJS Bill Green Mentorship Program in 2016 with Roger Newman and Scott Whitfield.
Kenton is an Eagle Scout and also a University of Miami Foote Fellow Scholar. He has studied trombone from Dante Luciani, Charlie Morillas, Ira Nepus, and Alex Iles; in addition to studying composition and arranging from Dr. Stephen Guerra, Dr. Teresa LeVelle, and Gary Lindsay.
Through the Frost School of Music, Kenton has performed at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival with the Studio Jazz Band and the Jazz Vocal 1 Ensemble. He has also performed with Wayne Bergeron, John Daversa, John Beasley, Christine Jensen, and John Fedchock. Kenton was also accepted into the 2020 JAS Academy where he worked under the instruction of Christian McBride and Brian Lynch. Upon finishing his music degree next spring. Kenton plans to continue studying writing music while forming a band in Los Angeles.
JOEL CURRERI is a jazz trumpeter from Marina del Rey, California. He is currently a junior at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, studying under Brian Lynch. Joey began playing music at age six when his parents introduced him to classical piano. Joey began playing trumpet at age ten and ventured into the jazz improvisational language in his freshman year of high school.
Since starting college, Joey has been selected as a semifinalist in the National Trumpet Competition’s jazz division in both his first and second year. In high school, Joey was selected as the jazz trumpet finalist in the National YoungArts competition, a member of the the 2017 and 2018 Grammy Camp Jazz Session Big Band, a member of the 2017 and 2018 Thelonious Monk Peer-to-Peer All-Star Sextet (touring and performing with Delfeayo Marsalis, Bobby Broom, and Lisa Henry), and toured Japan as a member of the 2018 Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. Joey has performed at the Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl and the Newport Jazz Festival as a part of summer workshops and community programs.
In 2017, Joey was selected to receive the LA Jazz Society’s Shelly Manne New Talent Award, performing at the Montalban theater in Hollywood. He is very grateful to still be in touch with, and to have received this opportunity to perform with his peers from the LA Jazz Society!
