Description
Open House and Tours of this recently completed Green renovation and makeover of Victorian commercial building in the heart of historic Toronto.
The Architect, Daniel Hall, O.A.A. will be leading tours of the building at 12:15pm, 12:45pm, and 1:15pm. Visitors are also free to explore on their own between 12:00 noon and 2:00pm.
The John Howard Society of Ontario [JHSO] provides research and policy development as well as administrative support to 19 local John Howard Societies throughout the province who in turn offer much needed support to people who have been in contact with the criminal justice system and are rebuilding their lives.
The Architect Builders Collaborative Inc has worked with the JHSO and their Contractor, A.P.S. Interiors Inc for over 2 years to realize the transformation of this 120 year old building from its previous use as a furniture store and apartment into a brightly lit, inspiring modern office. It was a challenge to adapt this narrow, dark, building with its layering of additions, previous renovations, odd levels and questionable structure. That it was possible to do so and make a modern, fully accessible, healthy and brightly lit workplace within the 15’ width is itself one of the greenest aspects of the project.
A rigorous and creative design process allowed us to make best use of a very tight space to accommodate all of the needs of the JHSO including room for growth and a 30 person boardroom. Of course, significant improvements were made to the building envelope along the way, an efficient heat-pump based HVAC system was added, and the fishes were all chosen with sustainability in mind. Although it is not a ‘deep’ green renovation, it is in many ways an example of a ‘broad’ green approach to design that values social and economic sustainability and healthy workplaces as much as energy efficiency and resource conservation.
The most striking feature of the new space is the use of natural light to draw you through the building and as a metaphor for the core value of the Clients - removing the stigma of contact with the criminal justice system.
We hope you will come see how a down-and-out neglected building can be given a fresh lease on life.
