Music and Artificial Intelligence
Overview and analysis of the music AI landscapeWritten by Marcus O’Dair, Associate Professor, Music and Innovation, Middlesex University, in partnership with Music 4.5
Introduction:Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems capable of performing tasks in an intelligent fashion. Intelligence, suggest the psychologists Robert Sternberg and William Salter, can be understood as ‘goal-directed adaptive behaviour’. The key word, saysSatalia CEO Daniel Hulme, is ‘adaptive’: the paradigm shift is from ‘same data, same decision’ to machines that can adapt without human intervention.
Blockchains and Data
Overview and analysis of the music blockchain and data landscapeWritten by Marcus O’Dair, Associate Professor, Music and Innovation, Middlesex University, in partnership with Music 4.5
Introduction:The exponential growth in the digital consumption of music has been accompanied by an exponential growth in data. Much of this data is extremely valuable: data, it is said, is ‘the new oil’. There are, however, a number of challenges that can be identified. The first is, simply, the sheer volume of data: without filters, we drown.Second, data is often ‘dirty’, due in part to a lack of standards. Catalogues are cobbled together from multiple acquisitions; some labels are said not to know what they own. New songs lacking proper metadata are uploaded every day.
Sync
Overview and analysis of the music sync landscapeWritten by Marcus O’Dair, Associate Professor, Music and Innovation, Middlesex University, in partnership with Music 4.5
Introduction:Synchronisation, or sync, rights emerged, historically, in response to a shift in cinema: from silent films to talkies. Sync, quite simply, refers to the use of music inconjunction with visual images – for instance in a film, advert or computer game. Although sync is sometimes understood as related only to publishing, to sync atrack to a TV show is in fact to exploit the ‘reproduction control’ of both the song and recording copyright; the ‘communication control’ of both the song and recording copyright, meanwhile, are exploited when the TV show is actually broadcast. A sync license, then, requires permission to use both the master recording and the composition, as represented through master use and publishing rights.
