Canada’s oldest operating hydroelectric generating station opens its doors
Hydro Ottawa is giving the public a unique opportunity to step inside Canada’s oldest operating hydroelectric generating station as part of Green Energy Doors Open Ottawa on Saturday, September 10.
Hydro Ottawa is the largest municipally-owned producer of green energy in Ontario with a generation capacity of 79 megawatts.
Commissioned in 1891 and refurbished and fully automated in 2001, the No. 2 Generating Station is Canada’s oldest surviving hydroelectric station still in operation. The construction of a new 29-megawatt (MW) facility at the Chaudière Falls location is underway.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Hydro Ottawa will welcome visitors to its Chaudière Falls Generating Station No. 2 for six back-to-back guided tours of the 124-year-old facility to discover how hydroelectricity was, and still is, produced.
