MEININGER HOFKAPELLE
Founded in the 17th century, the orchestra has been led by some of the most important musicians in history. This group, the so-called “Meininger Bachs” have been drawn to an orchestra of renown and a welcoming city and audience. The high caliber of the orchestra and the renown virtuosity of its players, later inspired Richard Wagner to create his festival orchestra in Bayreuth, with musicians from Meiningen.
Hans von Bülow brought international flair to the south of Thüringen. As a demon of work he rehearsed with the musicians and made them one of the leading orchestras. Johannes Brahms became centre of interest and his 4th Symphony was premiered in Meiningen.
In 1885 Bülow left and his 21 year old assistant, composer/conductor Richard Strauss took over as general music director of the orchestra. His tenure was followed by that of Fritz Steinbach, whose crowning achievement was a revival of the music of Bach. In 1911, Max Reger is quoted as saying: „There is only one orchestra I want to lead: Meiningen.“
In 1914 and during the First World War the orchestra work had to stop, and following the war, the former court orchestra was owned by the state of Thüringia.
In 2001 Meiningen attracted interest by performing Wagner’s Der Ring des Niebelungen under the baton of Kirill Petrenko. The new theatre director, Christine Mielitz, staged the work in a setting by famous artist Alfed Hricka. The project, “Venture Wagner“ turned was met with critical acclaim with both press and public.
On occasion of it´s 175th anniversary the orchestra, renamed itself the “Meininger Hofkapelle“, in respect the long history and tradition to which the players and administration has devoted themselves.
Since 2010 Philippe Bach is General Music Director of the ensemble. Celebrating it´s 325th anniversary in 2015/16 the orchestra staged Strauss’s CAPRICCIO for the first time in Meiningen and performed POWDER HER FACE by Thomas Adès, paying tribute to the orchestra´s philosophy of connecting tradition and contemporary music.
