The City of Hamilton is opening the doors to the Woodward Water & Wastewater Plant as part of Green Energy Doors Open Friday September 9th.
The Woodward Wastewater Treatment Plant and Glanbrook Landfill Site generate approximately $1,700,000 in annual net benefit to the City of Hamilton.
Woodward Biogas Purification Unit (BPU):
The BPU separates carbon dioxide and other impurities from methane to produce biomethane (pipe-line quality natural gas). The purified biomethane is injected into the Union Gas (UG) grid through a transfer station. The BPU offsets over 1,100 tonnes of CO2e and produces roughly 20,000 GJs of natural gas used for the City’s own requirements.
Woodward Cogeneration Unit:
A 1.6 Megawatt co-generation unit installed in 2006 utilizes approximately 15,600 m3 compressed biogas per day to produce 13,200 megawatt-hours of renewable energy per year. Under the city’s supply contract with the province, renewable energy will be supplied for 20 years at a fixed price per kilowatt-hour, with escalators. Heat from the cogeneration engine water jacket and exhaust is recovered through a heat exchanger. The hot water provides thermal energy for base heating loads via the plant heating loop.
Come out for a tour and see first hand how the plant works to generate renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions.
