LOS ANGELES JAZZ SOCIETY CELEBRATES ! - Flip Manne is turning 100!
May 3rd - 7:00 PM PDT • 10 PM EST
Born in 1921, (YES, ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO), Florence Butterfield was raised in Vermont, rode horses, took dance lessons, and in 1939 moved to New York where she soon auditioned at Radio City Music Hall and won a position in the famous Rockettes. Back then, they danced in four shows daily. (Until 2 years ago, she still attended tap class.) She met her husband - Shelly Manne - in the early 1940s and in 1951 Flip and Shelly moved to California where they raised and trained horses and Shelly became a world-famous jazz drummer. In '84 Shelly Manne received the Jazz Tribute Award from the Los Angeles Jazz Society and, loving jazz, Flip became involved with the Society. Flip established the Shelly Manne New Talent Award whereby for over 34 years she presents a scholarship to a talented young jazz musician at our annual Tribute. Flip was elected President in 2003, and served as our 'fearless leader" until 2019 when she passed the reigns to Lois Saffian. She was presented with our Jazz Tribute Award in 2014 at the Alex Theatre
