How to speak up at work
Speaking up at work when you witness insensitive behaviour, bullying or harassment can be challenging. Despite wanting to speak up, fear or the hope someone else will say something can often get the best of us. This fear can also be exacerbated if you are from a traditionally marginalised group or you worry about using the incorrect terminology. It does not have to be this way. This 2-hour workshop will equip you with tools and strategies to help speak up with confidence in support of others and yourself.

Speaking up requires a collective effort; therefore, the workshop is designed for employees at all levels, irrespective of seniority.
This free event is open to all BPI and AIM members as well as to other music industry associates.

About the Trainer: Arit Eminue
Arit Eminue (she/her) is a multi-award winning entrepreneur, career and leadership coach who helps businesses to recruit and retain talent and empowers people to realise their full potential in careers they enjoy.
She does this through DiVA an award-winning recruitment and training organisation specialising in creative, business, and digital apprenticeships, which she founded. Over the last decade, she has worked with well-known entertainment media brands including All3 Media, Sony Music, the BBC, Warner Music, Universal Music, Endemol Shine, Warner Bros, BMG, Sony ATV, the Southbank Centre, and many more. She also developed, in partnership with the BPI/BRIT Trust, the BRITs Apprenticeship scheme, funded by proceeds of BRIT Music Awards, which supports the next generation of music executives, and the UK Music Apprenticeship programme.
Arit holds an MA in Executive Leadership Development and Mentoring. As a Career Development & Leadership coach, she works with women who are looking to change careers or move into senior-level roles and delivers customized staff training programmes for employers. Her YouTube channel provides viewers worldwide with tips on how to build careers they love either through employment, entrepreneurship or a mixture of both.
About the Panelists:
Kate Reilly - Chief Membership and People Officer, PPL
Kate Reilly joined PPL in 2011 as Senior HR Business Partner and became Head of HR the following year before taking up the newly-created role of Director of People and Organisational Development in 2014. She was appointed Chief People Officer in 2021. Kate has over 20 years’ experience as a Human Resources professional working within the retail, financial services, oil, not-for-profit, and advertising industries, with expertise in HR strategy, recruitment and retention, coaching, training and development, TUPE, HRIS, payroll, and organisational planning and development.
In her current position, Kate is responsible for working in partnership with the business by delivering a HR strategy that supports the achievement of company goals. Kate leads on all people matters within PPL, with a particular focus on equity, diversity and employee engagement. Kate’s pioneering vision for an inclusive workplace has led to a strong equity and diversity strategy – spanning recruitment, training and development, and career progression opportunities – for which PPL won the Music Week Company Award for Diversity in the Workplace at the Women in Music Awards 2018. It also resulted in PPL winning ‘Company of the Year – Small to Medium Business’ award at the Employee Engagement Awards 2017.
Kate played a key part in helping to launch PPL PRS Ltd, PPL’s joint venture with PRS for Music. In 2019, alongside her senior role at PPL, she led the creation and implementation of the company’s new People strategy. This encompassed staff training, learning and development, benefits and rewards, equity and diversity, recruitment, performance management and internal communications and engagement. In addition to this Kate is responsible for property, sustainability and overall working environment. She also sits on the UK Music Skills board and the UK Music Diversity Taskforce where she has been supporting the Equity and Diversity agenda and helped set up the Diversity Taskforce.
Paul Hawkins - Head of Volunteering & Skills Development, Attitude is Everything
Paul Hawkins is the Head of Volunteering and Skills Development at Attitude is Everything and oversees Attitude is Everything’s work in getting more Deaf and disabled people working in the music industry. Prior to this, he advised festivals on disability access for five years and has designed and delivered training for clients as diverse as the SECC, AEG Europe, Glastonbury Festival and HM Government of Gibraltar. Outside of his role, he is a published author and has experienced the barriers disabled musicians face as the lead singer of the Awkward Silences who have played at Latitude and Kendal Calling festivals, recorded sessions for Radio 1 and feature in a new documentary.
Vick Bain - Former CEO of BASCA and Campaigner for Women in Music
Vick has worked in music and the creative industries for twenty-five years; for six years she was Chief Executive Officer of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers & Authors and is a Henley Business School MBA graduate. Vick is now the President of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, representing over 11,000 musicians in the UK. She was enrolled into the Music Week Women in Music Awards Roll of Honour and Radio 4 Woman’s Hour Music Industry Powerlist.
Vick specialises as a consultant and campaigner for diversity and inclusion in the creative industries, training and advising organisations with her clients ranging from record label trade bodies IMPALA and AIM to electronic music festivals to tv & film orchestras. This is grounded in her work as a PhD researcher at Queen Mary University in the Centre for Research in Equality and Diversity researching women’s careers in music.
Vick is a regular press commentator on gender diversity in the music industry with regular articles as well as influential report Counting the Music Industry, a gender audit of UK record labels and publishing companies. She is the founder of The F-List for Music directory of female musicians which is a not-for-profit organisation campaigning on behalf of and supporting female musicians in the UK. Vick is also a trustee of charity Parents & Carers in Performing Arts, a board director of music technology start-up Delic and on the advisory boards of numerous music industry panels.
