Description
BILARNI is an acclaimed one man show from renowned storyteller Jan 'Yarn' Wositzky (Bushwackers Band etc), which tells the story of the once-famous Northern Territory writer, yarn-spinner, Patrol Officer and bushman, William Edward (Bill) Harney (1895-1962).
This complex life story is told through writer/performer Jan 'Yarn' Wositzky's adventures 'up north', to where he travelled after hearing Bill Harney on ABC radio - the journey of a whitefella from 'down south', travelling to a beautiful and brutal land, where, he finds, everything and nothing is black and white.
Scripted from Bill Harney's many radio broadcasts, books, letters and other historical documents, BILARNI is poignant, sad, bawdy, mirthful, erudite and informative. It's a performance that brings Harney - the great yarn-spinner with his rapid-fire, philosophical, ironical delivery and his unique voice from a forgotten time - back to life. People such as Ted Egan who knew Bill Harney say that Jan 'Yarn' Wositzky has nailed the character.
In doing so BILARNI is complex storytelling that never allows audiences to rest easy in type-cast attitudes to black and white Australia.
