Description
“A cross between Disney and a horror film” (Martin Scorsese), BLACK NARCISSUS is an ecclesiastical, erotic nightmare that is hands down, one of the most sensual and beautiful films ever photographed. Featuring virtuoso cinematographer Jack Cardiff’s handiwork and a stunning, Himalayan palette perfected by Technicolor, Powell and Pressburger’s masterpiece demands to be seen on the big screen in its recent digital restoration overseen by one of the film’s biggest champions, director Martin Scorsese in collaboration with Powell’s widow Thelma Schoonmaker.
Sister Clodagh (Deborah Kerr) arrives to a recently opened convent high in the Himalayan mountains to assume her post as Mother Superior. Cut off from civilization and encountering conflict with both the mountain village’s residents, as well as internally amongst her own order of nuns, Clodagh discovers the terror that sexual repression wrecks. In particular, the feverish, hysterical Sister Ruth (Kathleen Byron) poses a major threat to Clodagh’s religious resolve, as she lusts after the village’s rugged British agent (David Farrar), bringing the latter to the brink of psychosexual insanity.
Featuring a performance from Sabu, as well as a breathtaking score, BLACK NARCISSUS is unmissable, unforgettable, and haunting. It’s simply the best “nuns gone wild” film ever made!
