THE FUNK YOU SAY? An International Funk Experience, with Detroiter Nadir Omowale and Canada’s LMT Connection, Saturday, July 9 at Northern Lights Lounge
DETROIT, MI: Distorted Soul Detroit and Detroit IS Different present THE FUNK YOU SAY? An International Funk Experience, on Saturday, July 9 at Northern Lights Lounge, 660 West Baltimore Street in Detroit. Showtime is at 9:00pm with live music by Thirteen-time Detroit Music Award winner Nadir Omowale’s six-piece band featuring powerhouse vocalist Steffanie Christi’an and Canada’s LMT Connection, featuring former Parliament/Funkadelic and Sugar Hill Records horn section The Chops Horns, and led by Detroit native Leroy Emmanuel, formerly with Westbound Records group The Fabulous Counts. Tickets are $10, available in advance at DistortedSoul.com or at the door.
In celebrating the release of two new singles on his Distorted Soul Detroit label, Detroit-based artist and producer, Nadir Omowale, invited his good friends, LMT Connection, for a rare Detroit visit during their current international tour. “I toured Europe a couple of times with LMT, and played a few dates with them in Canada over the years,” Omowale says. “They are one of my favorite bands! They put on a clinic every time they step on stage. When they told me they were swinging through the Midwest during their tour, I was thrilled to have them come and celebrate with us at our release party!”
Funk has been the final frontier for veteran soul group, LMT Connection. They have been laying it down for more than a quarter century. Having played over 5500 shows, regular international touring, five independently released, self-produced albums under their belts and helmed by a front man on the cusp of his 70th birthday, they are true masters of their craft.
Born in Atlanta and raised in Detroit, singer/guitarist Leroy Emmanuel was not only an active member of Detroit's thriving music community in the late 80s, supporting the likes of Marvin Gaye, Bohannon, and Bettye Lavette, but he is also an influential artist in his own right, earning a cult following with his group The Fabulous Counts (Westbound Records). Not long after a serendipitous relocation to Niagara Falls, Canada, Emmanuel founded LMT Connection with drummer Mark Rogers and bassist John Irvine. The trio linked up with the Chops Horns in 2005.
The New Jersey-based horn section already had an impressive resume of their own; having just come off the road with Alicia Keys and having performed with The Police, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Parliament-Funkadelic, and on several early 80s Sugar Hill Records releases, just to name a few highlights. LMT also added Joel Parisien to the mix, and doubling the original line-up to a powerful six-piece. (As another note of interest, the same personnel, with Parisien up front, formed a highly successful side project called Newworldson, garnering four Juno© nominations - the Canadian equivalent to a Grammy© - for Gospel Album of the Year in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2013. Their friend, Nadir, co-wrote a song on Newworldson’s second LP, while Joel and Nadir co-wrote the song “Stickin’” for Nadir’s 2012 album The Book of Jonah.Award-winning Detroit area musician Nadir Omowale, has spent a considerable amount of time behind the mixing console in the last few years producing and engineering projects for poet Jessica Care Moore, Underground Resistance’s Hi-Tech Jazz quartet Timeline, rocker Steffanie Christi’an, and alt-country singer/songwriter Joe Jaber. His latest offerings under his own name are two singles, the purple-tinged, post-Hendrix rocker “The Right Kind of Crazy” and a funky exploration of police encounters called “Blue Lights” which features Amp Fiddler and the Will Sessions Horns.
THE FUNK YOU SAY will take advantage of Northern Lights’ breezy North End patio, full menu and well-stocked libations. “This is a fabulous opportunity to experience world class funk on a beautiful summer night in Detroit,” Omowale says. Life simply couldn’t be better.
