The Lung Association RENASCENT / CIHR - ICRH Workshop in partnership with the Canadian Respiratory Research Network and Canadian Thoracic Society
Respiratory research trainees at the PhD and post-doctoral levels and new investigators are invited to participate in the 5th annual RENASCENT Training Workshop. RENASCENT is a program of The Lung Association. The training workshop will be co-hosted by The Lung Association and CIHR-ICRH, in partnership with the Canadian Respiratory Research Network and the Canadian Thoracic Society.
Please note that CRRN has reached the maximum allocation to financially support attendance, therefore anyone seeking CRRN support who is not already registered is no longer eligible for CRRN funding.

Bio: Dr. Brian Rowe
Dr. Rowe is a clinician-scientist who was trained clinically at the University of Ottawa in Family and Emergency Medicine. His graduate research degree is in Clinical Epidemiology from McMaster University in Hamilton, ON. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Alberta and he continues to practice clinical emergency medicine at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. He held a Tier I Canada Research Chair in Evidence-based Emergency Medicine from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) from 2011-2018. He is Co-Editor of the Cochrane Airways Group, Editor of the textbook Evidence Based Emergency Medicine and has authored or co-authored 520 peer-reviewed publications and 35 book chapters. Dr. Rowe is the Scientific Director of the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health at CIHR.
Bio: Dr. Nathalie Gendron
Nathalie Gendron obtained a Ph.D. from the Université de Paris VII and pursued health-related research as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Ottawa and later at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute. After holding a position as a Research Scientist at the CHEO Apoptosis Research Centre, she joined CIHR as a Deputy Director (Program Delivery) in 2006. In that capacity she oversaw the peer review for the open competition and the strategic initiatives under 3 CIHR Institutes (Circulatory and Respiratory Health; Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction; Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes). From 2010 to 2015, Dr. Gendron was an Assistant Director for the CIHR’s Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction. She was responsible for strategic programs and partnerships in the areas of Mental Health and Addiction. Since 2015, Dr. Gendron is Manager, Program Design and Delivery, in charge of program delivery for nine CIHR Institutes and a number of CIHR initiatives.
Bio: Dr. Anu Koppada Perera
Anu Perera is a UK-registered physician that transitioned into Pharma 7 years ago when she landed her first industry job in Regulatory Affairs at GSK. She then went on to hold Medical Affairs field and head-office roles of increasing responsibility, at GSK, Roche and Bristol-Myers Squibb.
Anu is currently Medical Director, Respiratory at GSK where she leads the Medical Strategy for the Respiratory business and manages a large team comprised of head-office and field-based staff.
Anu obtained her Medical Degree from the University of the West Indies, before working as a physician in the UK for 4 years, where she trained in Pathology in the North West of England.
Outside of work, Anu enjoys family and Marvel.

Trainees will have the opportunity to practice effective informational interviewing with the panelists and RENASCENT mentors. Trainee/mentor stories from each table will be shared with all.
Bio: Dr. Nana Lee
Dr. Nana Lee holds a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Toronto, a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Michigan and was a Visiting Scholar at Whitehead (Broad) Institute for Biomedical Research, MIT with the world’s leading group of the International Human Genome Project. Her roles in the biotechnology industry include Senior Research Scientist for Ellipsis Biotherapeutics, Toronto and Senior Research Scientist, Product Manager and Director of Application Science for DNA Software, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
She currently holds the position of Director and Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream of GPD for both Departments of Biochemistry and Immunology. She is also the Director of Mentorship and GPD for Graduate Life & Science Education (GLSE), Faculty of Medicine. Her most recent initiative is spearheading the GLSE PhD Leaders Program 2018. She instructs 5-6 sessions of GPD per academic year. She has presented to over 1000 audience members from high school, undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty and professionals throughout the USA and Canada.

The presenters will provide some tips on the interview process, contrast academic and non-academic interview processes, and then stress similar preparation requirements and outcomes to plan for.
Bio: Dr. Grace Parraga
Dr. Parraga’s lab is focused on developing a deep understanding of chronic lung disease using novel imaging methods, in patient-based research.The overarching goal of her team’s research is to discover, validate and clinically translate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) biomarkers of lung disease while generating the evidence to support the clinical use of lung MRI to change asthma and COPD patient outcomes. Her lab is home to 20 trainees and staff and she has trained over 100 students and fellows in the past 14 years.
Dr. Parraga completed a PhD at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. Upon completing post-doctoral studies at the University of Basel, (Switzerland), she joined F. Hoffman La Roche AG as a Scientist in Pharmaceutical Research and Development (Switzerland). After working in the private sector and research administration for 14 years, she returned to academic research at Robarts Research Institute and Western University. Her lab is currently funded by Heart & Stroke (Canada), Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (Canada), Canada Foundation for Innovation and Canada Research Chairs Program.
Bio: Dr. Ryan Perry
Dr. Ryan Perry is currently the Assistant Scientific Director for the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) – Institute for Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH), and has held other key leadership roles within the health research and innovation system. Dr. Perry has particular expertise in provincial, national and international research and innovation environments, basic biomedical research, mentorship, training & early career development, team science, research impact frameworks, health research administration and managing peer-review funding mechanisms. Dr. Perry has a PhD in Biochemistry from Dalhousie University, and an MSc in Experimental Medicine and BSc(Honours) in Physiology from the University of Alberta.

Julia leads parliamentary and cabinet affairs at CIHR and is responsible for analyzing federal budgets, elections and Speeches from the Throne as well as preparing parliamentary updates for Senior Executives.
Bio: Jean-Michel Levesque Jean-Michel leads policy files at CIHR related to innovation, tobacco control, vaping products and artificial intelligence. He also leads files related to the Institute of Genetics, Institute of Cancer Research, Institute of Health Services and Policy Research and Institute of Population and Public Health. He also provides support to the EVP/President of CIHR.

Presentation: "Research Advocacy for Trainees: Encounters of the Political Kind"
In this presentation, Ms. Deborah Gordon-El-Bihbety, President and CEO of Research Canada, will provide trainees with a brief overview of Research Canada, a unique health research advocacy alliance dedicated to advancing Canadian health research and health innovation as well as provide trainees with information on how they become effective health research advocates. She will delve into the reasons why science and policymakers make for strange bedfellows and explain why advocates have to know the political environment and understand the policy cycle. She will talk about the importance of developing key messaging skills and a propensity for collaboration with like-minded advocates.
Bio: Ms. Deborah Gordon-El-Bihbety
Ms. Deborah Gordon-El-Bihbety has been the President and CEO of Research Canada for fifteen years. She brings considerable executive level experience in public policy, health advocacy, government relations, association management, project management and media relations to Research Canada.Before joining Research Canada (then the Council for Health Research in Canada) in 2003, Ms. Gordon-El-Bihbety was the Associate Chief Executive Officer at the Canadian Public Health Association, where she was responsible for the Association’s national programs and businesses.
Ms. Gordon-El-Bihbety helped to create and co-chairs the R8 (Research Eight), a group of eight national organizations dedicated to advancing health research in Canada. She created the Parliamentary Health Research Caucus in 2009 with Senator Wilbert Keon in an effort to better educate Parliamentarians about the social and economic benefits of Canadian health research and health innovation. The Caucus is now a mainstay of Research Canada’s advocacy efforts.
Ms. Gordon-El-Bihbety has a background in health research, having published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal and a number of other journals. She was the Co-chair of the Expert Panel on Health Literacy and the co-author of the Report of the Expert Panel, entitled, A Vision for a Health Literate Canada, published in January 2008.She also chaired the Leaders’ Forum Steering Committee which resulted in the 2004 Leaders Forum for Health Research in Canada in Ottawa. She is a past Board Director of the Elisabeth Bruyère Research Institute and has worked closely with many national health associations on a wide variety of health research and health policy issues.
Ms. Gordon-El-Bihbety is also a published novelist.
