Session Descriptions
- Keys to Research Success
ICRH Presentation - The Changing Research Landscape and Adapting to the Evolving Career Opportunities
The focus of the presentation will be on the changing health research and innovation landscape in Canada and how the changing landscape presents new career opportunities. The presentation will also focus on ways CIHR and the Institutes are meeting these challenges to generate scientific, professional and organizational leaders within and beyond the health research enterprise.
CRRN Presentation - Grant Writing: Keys for Success
This session will discuss strategies and recommendations for writing a successful grant in today’s competitive funding environment.
CIHR Presentation - CIHR College of Reviewers and the Training of Peer Reviewers to Address Emerging Challenges like Unconscious Bias in Peer Review
This session will cover the development of the College of Reviewers at CIHR, the various peer review learning modules that are available to develop your peer review skills, and ways that you can engage in peer review at CIHR. In addition, this session will focus on the topic of unconscious bias in peer review and provide trainees with a better understanding of how unconscious bias can influence the way one conducts peer review of grant applications. Armed with this knowledge, trainees will then be able to self-assess and reflect on unconscious bias influences when conducting their assessments in the following session. Trainees can also apply this information to improve their grant writing and peer review skills to enhance their preparation of manuscripts and grant applications.
CTS Workshop: Grant Writing – Peer Review Session:
This hands-on session includes a mock peer review of 1 page LOI/abstracts submitted by the trainees. The objective of this session is to provide trainees with insight of the review process and identify what reviewers are looking for in order for the trainees to improve their grant/manuscript writing.Trainees will be placed in small groups and the mock peer review will be led by a senior faculty member. The trainees will be required to submit a 1 page LOI/abstract at least a month in advance so that we can group the trainees to the appropriate peer review groups.
Networking Reception
Come meet colleagues and trainees from across Canada in an enjoyable and relaxed Networking Reception that will be taking place: Wednesday evening April 26th, 2017 at: TBD.
Session Descriptions - Communicating Research Success
Trainees will have the opportunity to attend two workshop sessions.
Communicating Research to the Media:
Researchers need their stories told. Journalists want to tell them. The public is keen to learn about new research that could impact their lives. Yet, some things can be lost in translation from the lab to the newsroom.
This session will review the challenges and opportunities of communicating research to the media and will provide trainees with an outline of key considerations to keep in mind to get their story told. The hands-on portion of the workshop will pair small groups of trainees with journalism students who will interview the trainees about their research projects. At the end of the session each journalist-in-training will explain the research he or she learned about to the group thereby providing feedback to the trainees on the effectiveness of their communication.
Communicating Research to Health Policy Makers:
You’re an expert in your field of research and you have been invited to present at the Government of Canada’s Standing Committee on Health. This is your opportunity to influence the development of Canada’s health policy.
This session will provide trainees with an overview of health policy development in Canada and an outline of how to effectively communicate their research/expertise to panel members. The hands-on portion of the workshop will be a simulation of a Standing Committee on Health meeting related to lung health policies. Trainees will be invited to present and participate as experts in their area of research.
CRRN Trainee Network Meeting
The CRRN Trainee Network will host this meeting including the nomination and election of the Executive Committee. Trainees who are affiliated with the CRRN are invited to participate.
