Description
Greetings,As a survivor of the Platte Canyon shooting, whether you are a former student, staff member, or community member, The I Love U Guys Foundation extends an invitation for you to attend this event. This session is one part of a safety symposium that we host each Summer (thebriefings.org), which we are opening up to you; there will also be participants of the entire symposium in attendance*.
The purpose is to present an informative session containing facts of the incident to help clarify the events of 09/27/2006, and provide answers to lingering questions. It will include the tactical debrief. The anticipated outcome is to help anyone who feels the trauma of the incident is still affecting them.
Everyone experiences trauma during certain parts of their lives, and this one is shared by many in Bailey. The opening presentation will address dealing with trauma (see below) and is useful knowledge for everyone. You’re welcome to attend only this part of it if you wish.Opening: Noon - 1:45 Dr. John Nicolett, Nicoletti-Flater Associates: Specialists in Police and Public Safety Psychology, Crisis Intervention, Trauma Recovery, and Violence PreventionDescription: A school violence death is an incredible tragedy and a devastating loss in so many ways. The ripple effects are far stretching and deeply impactful. We all have assumptions about the world and our lives. These assumptions can be something like ‘my kids are safe (I am safe) at school and nothing bad can happen there, or ‘I am safe in my community.’ When the assumptions become shattered we must make a choice to engage in denial (it won’t happen again), psychologically deteriorate into feelings of helplessness or hopelessness, avoid the situation by leaving, or developing a ‘New Normal.’Debrief: 2 - 5:00 John-Michael Keyes (parent), Stacy Avila (JeffCo hostage negotiator) and Cdr. A.J. DeAndrea (JeffCo SWAT) debrief the Platte Canyon high school shooting in 2006. Learn about the tactics and logistics from these very different perspectives. After: 5 - 7:00 Stay for a pizza dinner and time to decompress
For some people, the full debriefing is part of the healing process; if you think you would benefit by attending, please register here at no cost.Contact: 303-426-3100 / pchs_debrief@iloveuguys.org
