It’s been 40 years since Suspiria slashed its way onto the big screen and revolutionized the horror genre and Ladies of Burlesque is celebrating by screening the stunning, newly-minted 4K restoration. Complete with a bloody ballet burlesque act from Sam Antics (performed to Goblin, of course), this promises to be the social event of the Halloween season!
Often cited as one of the truly terrifying films of the horror genre, Suspiria is a fauvist visual feast—mesmerizing, yet repulsive at the same time. Its prog-rock Goblin score, lush cinematography, and punctuated palette of bold primary colours (director Dario Argento and cinematographer Luciano Tovoli consulted Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarves to conceptualize the film’s Technicolor-printed hues), make its freakish landscape and hyper realized gore all the more horrific—like a Hieronymus Bosch nightmare come to life.
The first in Italian master Dario Argento’s “Three Mothers” trilogy, Suspiria stars Jessica Harper as Suzy Bannion, an American ballerina, whose prestigious scholarship finds her studying at the Tanz Dance Academy in Freiburg, Germany. Upon her arrival, foul deeds and suspicious circumstances surround her, leading her to believe that the school’s mistresses (played by film noir legends Joan Bennett and Alida Valli) are not what they claim. Satanic rituals, a rain shower of maggots, and a series of grisly murders terrorize Suzy and her classmates leading to a horrific crescendo of a cinematic conclusion.
