“I've been kicked around all my life, and from now on, I'm gonna start kicking back.” – Annie Laurie Starr in Gun Crazy
The film that influenced Arthur Penn’s BONNIE & CLYDE, a notorious film noir featuring the great Peggy Cummins in a career-defining role, GUN CRAZY is a down-and-dirty, scathing masterpiece that delves into the psychology behind ammunition-derived arousal. Cummins as the rebellious, depraved sharp-shooter Annie Laurie Starr pushes the boundaries of the femme fatale to its outer limits—as evidenced in the film’s original release title “Deadly is the Female.” And speaking of deadly, we’ll have Charlie Quinn serving up some Annie Oakley realness on stage!
Gun crazy Bart Tare (John Dall) is recently released from reform school and fresh out of the army. Attending a travelling carnival, he spots bombshell sharpshooter Annie Laurie Starr (Cummins) and is smitten with her and her considerable prowess with a gun. The two pair up and she convinces him that a life of crime is the only way he can provide the kind of life she expects. Bank robberies ensue as the mid-century Bonnie and Clyde become the FBI’s most wanted. As the death toll climbs—a result of a trigger-happy Starr—Tare must come to terms with his soulmate’s depravity.
Written by a blacklisted Dalton Trumbo, GUN CRAZY is the ultimate film noir with a powerful, complicated and profoundly alluring femme fatale. It also stands as one of the first anti-gun films to come out of Hollywood. Screening in a stunning 4K restoration.
