MARK CHRISTIAN MILLER began pursuing his love for the jazz idiom when he auditioned for and won a scholarship to complete the two-year full time music program at Los Angeles City College from drummer David Alpert, brother of Herb Alpert. He was hosting an Honors Concert performance at LACC when he came to the attention of Teri Merrill-Aarons founder of the Los Angeles Jazz Society, who began booking Miller in top venues around town. Scott Yanow called Miller “A superior vocalist, one of LA’s finest.” Miller was selected to appear in a series of appearances with the legendary Anita O’Day at the Atlas Supper Club in Los Angeles. That same year he met Page Cavanaugh, and went on to appear with Cavanaugh numerous times and recorded his debut CD Like Sunlight on Water with Cavanaugh. Michael Feinstein called Miller’s work “joyful, swinging, and a pleasure to hear.”
Miller released his sophomore record in 2015 with Josh Nelson on piano. Crazy Moon spent four months on the JazzWeek charts, and was chosen as one of the top releases of 2015 by Jazz History Online. Largely self-taught on the piano, he has studied privately with Jane Getz and Joyce Collins.
As a booker and promoter he curated the popular “Music on the Main” summer series at Descanso Gardens and continues to book music for a variety of venues, including artists for the City of West Hollywood, and LA Made at the Grand Central Library, where he worked with NEA Jazz Master Hubert Laws. Miller has also booked artists into Jazz Alley in Seattle, Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., and the Dubai International Jazz Festival.Miller performs regularly in Los Angeles, New York and Seattle. Author James Gavin calls Miller’s singing, “a pleasure to the ear – breezy, rhythmically nimble, honest and full of heart.”
JOSH NELSON has performed with some of the most respected names in jazz, including Kurt Elling, John Pizzarelli, Benny Golson, Sheila Jordan, John Clayton, George Mraz, Jeff Hamilton, Dave Koz, Joe Chambers and Peter Erskine. Nelson toured with legendary vocalist Natalie Cole for six years and continues to tour with vocalists Gaby Moreno, Freda Payne, Alicia Olatuja, Sara Gazarek, accordionist Richard Galliano, saxophonist Tom Scott, multi-instrumentalist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and violinist Christian Howes. He taught jazz for four years at Soka University and more recently at Cal State University Northridge. In 2006, Nelson was a semi-finalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition. His debut album as a leader, 2004’s Anticipation, garnered attention while his 2007 follow-up,
Let it Go, was hailed by Jazz Times, All About Jazz and Jazz Review as a fully-realized breakthrough album. Nelson’s next album, 2009’s I Hear a Rhapsody, had him re-imagining Jerry Goldsmith’s “Theme From Chinatown,” Jimmy Van Heusen’s “Here’s That Rainy Day” and Elliott Smith’s “Everything Means Nothing To Me” while contributing seven affecting originals. With 2011’s sci-fi influenced Discoveries, Nelson introduced his Discovery Project, an immersive multi-media presentation combining video, performance art, light and art installations with his original music.
Born into a musical family, LARRY KOONSE has been playing the guitar since he was seven years old. At the age of fifteen he recorded an album with his father, guitarist Dave Koonse, entitled Dave and Larry Koonse; father and son jazz guitars. In 1984, Larry was the first recipient of a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California. Immediately after graduating from USC Larry toured extensively for six years as a member of the John Dankworth quartet, traveling all across the globe and backing up Cleo Laine. He is a member of Billy Child’s landmark chamber sextet whose most recent CD release is titled Autumn: In Moving Pictures. He has received multiple grammy nominations for the aforementioned CD (jazz album of the year and instrumental performance); for the sextet’s first release Lyric (ensemble performance); and for two Luciana Souza releases (best vocal album for Tide and Book of Chet). He has also toured with Mel Torme, Bob Brookmeyer, Billy Childs, John Patitucci, David Friesen, Karrin Allyson, Luciana Souza, Natalie Cole, Bob Mintzer, Tierney Sutton, Peter Erskine, Hubert Laws, Warne Marsh and was a featured performer with the Percy Faith Orchestra on a tour of Japan. Larry was the first recipient of the Shelly Manne New Talent Award from the Los Angeles Jazz Society.

The World Stage is an educational and performance art space in Leimert Park Village, the heart of Los Angeles’ African American cultural community. It was founded in 1989 by the late world-renowned master jazz drummer Billy Higgins and by poet and community arts activist Kamau Daáood, in an attempt to fill a cultural void in the L.A. community. Initially formed as a loose collective of artists and arts supporters, The World Stage has grown to assume a pioneering and pivotal role in South L.A.’s music and art landscape. The Stage’s mission is to secure, preserve and advance the position of African American music, literature and works in the oral tradition to a local, national and international audience. www.theworldstage.org___________
