Description
BLACK GOLD returns Thursday, January 10th with the Toronto premiere of RaMell Ross' poignant and much-lauded poetic doc, HALE COUNTY THIS MORNING, THIS EVENING!Please note: a limited amount of *FREE* tickets for this screening will be set aside for members of the black community. Please message BLACK GOLD on Facebook or Instagram to reserve your complimentary ticket.--"HALE COUNTY THIS MORNING, THIS EVENING takes a look at the Alabama Black Belt county home to just under 15,000 people, almost 60% of whom are black, according to the U.S. Census. The film — unique in its aesthetic and innovative in its structure and narrative arc — follows Daniel and Quincy, two young black men, and their families. Ross, who first discovered his subjects while he was the manager of a local youth program and basketball coach, weaves contemporary lived experiences of what the South looks like along with historical context for an intimate portrait of black identity.Void of the traditional struggle on which documentaries about the black experience often center, “Hale County” ruptures conventional — and often stereotypical — depictions of black people to create an experience that is simple, complex and revelatory."— Tre'vell Anderson, The LA Times"HALE COUNTY THIS MORNING, THIS EVENING is a poetic documentary with a gift for making enrapturing imagery out of what sound like ordinary, everyday events....Though words can describe what HALE COUNTY shows, they really can’t convey how involving this visual symphony is. As much as anything else, the film is a tribute to the mystical power of the moving image, and to Ross’ keen and empathetic eye"— Kenneth Turan, The LA TimesGenerously sponsored by The Beguiling Books & Art and Eyesore Cinema.Black Gold would like to extend a warm thank you to our friends at MDFF and TIFF for making this screening possible.--Black Gold wishes to acknowledge the Haudenosaunee, the Huron-Wendat, and the Mississaugas of the New Credit, the original keepers of this land, for hosting Black Gold and The Royal Cinema.
