Description
"...don't you know there ain't no devil there's just God when he's drunk..."
Four solo performers, each presenting their own unique take on classics from the Tom Waits songbook. This is an excellent opportunity to get out of that pesky spring sunshine and conjure up some dirty streets, the look of a tramp, the voice of a broken angel and a
sound that combines blues, vaudeville, cheap whiskey and jazz - in what promises to be a very special afternoon indeed at
Old Church Theatre in Trenton.
The four performers for this program all promise to bring a distinctly different approach to this tribute. Each are creative forces on their own - yet each have a specific admiration for and connection to Tom Waits.
Bill Wood is what happens when the songs are the main event. When 30 years of songwriting, honed over a lifetime of experience, meets the craftsmanship of a career musician who just doesn’t know what it means to compromise.
"I've been singing my own songs pretty well my whole life. That's what I do. There are songwriters out there in this world that humble and inspire. Tom Waits is one of them. Hallowed territory really. It's both a joy and a terror performing these songs."
He is a Juno nominated, industry veteran, singer-songwriter from Picton, Ontario who has been writing songs, recording, performing and perfecting his craft over more than three decades. You get the sense that Bill believes in the power of a really good song, regardless of genre.
Listeners are typically surprised to learn that his tunes are his own - there’s a depth and gritty reality to them. Even his newest songs have the feel of a classic.
Tony Vani has released four studio albums. He has been making music in the Belleville area for decades. Folks in the music community know him as a versatile and generous performer, cranking out blues and gospel with Tony Vani & The Holy Blues Band and as part of a delta blues duo with slide guitarist Kenny Pauze.
But, Tony on his own is a compelling solo act. And, his appreciation for Tom Waits shows in his eyes when he talks about the opportunity to be part of this tribute. "This is my chance for me to pay tribute to a man who never gets the airplay or recognition he deserves."
"Tony is a respected singer and guitarist, but it is his harmonica playing that really grabs me by the throat. The best description of his playing is 'authentic'. I hear flashes of of Charlie Musselwhite and the immortal Little Walter in his playing." - David Reed
Kim Doolittle has been making music professionally for over 45 years as a Singer, Songwriter and Storyteller. Music is her life sounds like a cliche - but in her case it’s the best way to describe it.
As Kim puts it, “I love to sing, write, play and tell stories about a life I had perfectly planned. Those plans went more curly than straight, teaching me that too many plans are laughable while those curves inform my Muse.”
"I was invited to go and see Tom Waits for the Frank's Wild Years Tour. He was so bizarre and non commercial and over the top that I was instantly drawn to him. A true artist he is beyond dispute and he flies his own freak flag with gusto and no fear. Looking forward to channeling this immense talent."
She has released nine studio albums, is prolific songwriter and is constantly creating music that comes straight from the heart and with a deep desire to move forward authentically, with a respectful eye to looking back at where it all began.
“May all your blues be the musical kind.” - Kim Doolittle
Randy Stewart can most often be found hosting Open Mic Night at Old Church Theatre where he gets an opportunity to introduce their faithful audience to the amazing array of local talent that shows up week after week. He will be Master of Ceremonies for this show as well.
Mr. Stewart is a
Canadian singer/songwriter who has been performing professionally for
more than 30 years. He has been seen on television, heard on radio and
recorded by the CBC. His recordings can be found in the delete bins of
some of the country’s finest record stores – and his new song
Buck-A-Beer is currently an 'internet sensation' on Youtube. Originally
from Northwestern Ontario, he now lives on a small farm outside Trenton
Ontario. His set list leans heavily on his distinctive original songs
but also includes an eclectic mix of country, folk, jazz standards and
pop – all reworked into his own unique style.
He has been crusading for years to purge love songs from his performances. His mantra – Sad Songs & Funny Songs ‘I DON’T PLAY LOVE SONGS’
– has become familiar to music fans throughout the region. The
lovelorn, lovesick and skeptical can all take refuge when Mr. Stewart
takes the stage to give them something to sing about – that doesn’t wear
its heart on its sleeve.
“There’s a lot of performers out there singing about love and relationships – I’m just not one of ‘em”.
