A net positive building is one that generates more energy than it uses. GEDO 2016 offers Albertans the chance to see Canada’s first net positive secondary suite and main residence. The main objective of this new concept of urban building was to design a structure that would provide a garage and personal studio on the main level, and a secondary suite on the upper level, and provide a power/heat generating system for both the new building and the main residence. Electricity bills are zero and there is a slight surplus of electricity, thereby creating net positive electricity. The house features a number of green technologies intended to reduce the project’s footprint, including:
In-floor heating
Solar energy for heating and hot water
High efficiency appliances
Low-flow toilets, shower heads and kitchen taps with an eye on modern looks
LED lighting and power bars to shut down any power drains during the night or day when nobody is home
Exterior design to minimize heat loss while fitting in with early 1900s neighborhood
Triple glazed windows to provide optimum sunlight and passive heat component
No north-facing windows, to reduce heat loss during long, cold winter months
Landscaping designed for minimal water consumption for our semi-arid climate.
