Description
When Race, Technology, & Healthcare Collide: In Conversation with Elamin Abdelmahmoud and Takara Small
Canada’s universal healthcare system is a point of pride in our country. It’s a system that promises essential healthcare services to its citizens based off of need, rather than the ability to pay. Yet, many people don’t feel they’re getting the standard of care that our system promises us. Recent stories, testimony and discourse challenge the claim that our healthcare system is truly universal. Racial and gender inequities, especially when intersected, severely impair the delivery of equitable care.
What does it mean to experience healthcare as a black woman? As a black man?
What role should healthcare technology play in relation to racial and gender inequality?
Is our healthcare system truly universal?
Join us for an evening of personal stories and discussion with Elamin Abdelmahmoud from Buzzfeed and Takara Small from CBC as we explore the intersection of blackness, healthcare, and technology.
Elamin Abdelmahmoud
Elamin Abdelmahmoud is a curation editor at BuzzFeed News and Social media editor at BuzzFeedCanada. Last year he wrote a piece for Chatelaine called "As A New Dad, How Do I Equip My Daughter For The Age Of Trump?" in which he wrestles with how racial tensions here and in the United States have boiled over, and what it will take for him to equip his baby daughter for the future.
