Union United Church was founded in July 1907 by a group of Black railway porters and their wives (founding members of the Coloured Women’s Club) to worship in their own church in their own style with dignity, respect of person and equality of participation, regardless of gender, one’s ethnic origin or faith.
Falling into disrepair over its 109 years, the Capital Campaign was established by Dr. Oliver Jones and funds were raised for extensive renovations. Our Church was closed for five years while the Congregation met at other churches in Montreal. Union United's doors were reopened in September 2015.
Union United is the home church of many brilliant musicians, including Oscar Peterson, Oliver Jones, Norman Marshall Villeneuve, the Sealy Brothers, Chuck Peterson, Daisy Sweeney-Peterson, Richard Paris, dancer Charles Griffith, vocalist Skipper Dean and many more.
This benefit is to help the Capital Campaign with ongoing renovations, including repairs to the adjacent Manse, where Oscar Peterson was born.
I am very grateful to the fabulous musicians and singers who will make a gift of their time and talent to help this endeavour. I have been a member of Union United since the age of 7. I am proud of our legacy and congregation and deeply grateful for their friendship and love.
I hope you will be able to join us. Thank you and much love to you.
Norman Marshall Villeneuve
