About the Seattle Gathering
Together with our local host, Seattle Made, the Urban Manufacturing Alliance invites you to our Fall 2017 Gathering in Seattle. Our Gathering theme, Localism as an Engine for Production Economies, will showcase local programming that is strengthening the manufacturing sector and building stronger communities. Localism creates a strong sense of place and fuels momentum around community partnerships. At UMA, we have found that the success of programs serving the manufacturing sector turn on partnerships at the local level. These partnerships take many forms—from multi-stakeholder coalitions focused on industry revitalization, to maker spaces joining forces with faith-based institutions, to high schools and community colleges working with manufacturers to administer local apprenticeships. And indeed, it is those locally-driven partnerships that harness manufacturing growth for broader community development outcomes.
Our task as UMA members is to build connections regionally and nationally, so local experimentation is pursued in a coordinated way. At the Gathering, we will collectively explore how UMA members are:
Creating places and spaces that celebrate fabrication, drawing people into their cities who want to connect to the process of making as a consumer, employee, entrepreneur, or inquisitive urban dweller;
Supporting greater access to high-quality production jobs that provide career ladders and family-sustaining wages;
Enhancing our approach to education at every level through a deeper connection to the trades, which in turn fuels a cycle of innovation both in and out of the classroom.
Some Gathering highlights will include:
UMA, with the support of the Surdna Foundation, will share some of its research on how local brands are advancing equity in their production ecosystems, from hiring and training programs to maker mentorship.
Seattle Made will spotlight its work launching Seattle Sewn, an initiative to grow and support a diverse local sewn-goods economy, creating the conditions for meaningful employment, increased local manufacturing capacity, and industry collaboration and vibrancy.
In honor of MFG Day, attendees will have the opportunity to tour apparel production facilities and training studios, which may include Filson, Outdoor Research and Muses. Members will also connect to broader set of Manufacturing Day and Seattle Made Week programs.
Attendees will learn what public sector partners are doing to support Seattle’s production economy, including the City of Seattle’s recent industrial lands advisory panel that looked a land use preservation strategy for the manufacturing and maritime sector alongside the City’s population growth; an overview of the Northwest Seaport Alliance, a unique joint venture between the public ports of Tacoma and Seattle; and the Port of Seattle’s plans for a 700,000 square foot maker district, and a strategy for manufacturing incubation in a variety of sectors from food to maritime.
This Gathering purposefully coincides with National Manufacturing Day (MFG Day), which opens up factory floors to communities all across the nation throughout the month of October, beginning on October 6th. The Gathering also directly precedes Seattle Made’s “Seattle Made Week” – a week-long celebration of everything made within the city limits. Seattle Made Week begins on Manufacturing Day with youth-focused tours of manufacturing facilities around Seattle. Through our Gathering, National MFG Day, and Seattle Made Week, UMA and Seattle Made hope to expose local residents, regional partners, and national visitors to Seattle’s robust manufacturing industry.

About Seattle Made
With 450 members (and growing at about 5 new members each week), the local manufacturer and artisan platform Seattle Made is a magnet for the city’s innovation economy. By connecting entrepreneurs with outside resources and each other, the organization’s goal is to build an ecosystem out of Seattle’s diverse set of manufacturers and producers, who craft quality products that range from chocolates to embroideries, beers to bike parts and t-shirts to guitar amps.
Seattle Made’s mission is to expand opportunities for local ownership and meaningful employment, build the region’s long-term resiliency, celebrate Seattle’s unique cultural identity -- and with Emerald City rents on the rise, give makers a peer network they can lean on as they try to scale and sustain in the current real estate climate. The network is one of multiple ongoing programs guided by Seattle Good Business Network, a nonprofit organization working to connect and inspire people to buy, produce, and invest locally so that everyone has a meaningful stake in their city.
