Description
The December The Royal Cinema pays homage to one of the pioneers of American independent cinema, John Cassavetes. We are thrilled to be presenting four extraordinary films from his near-perfect and absolutely necessary filmography: Opening Night (1977), Husbands (1970), The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976), and our closing film of the retrospective, A Woman Under the Influence (1974), which will be presented on 35mm. Be sure to grab your full-retrospective pass and see all four films for $40 (available online only! limited availability!) Individual tickets go on sale November 15.
DECEMBER 7 - OPENING NIGHT (1977)
Gena Rowlands is enthralling as Broadway actor Myrtle Gordon, who witnesses the death of an adoring fan in the midst of rehearsals for her latest play. Struck with overwhelming guilt, she is confronted by her own chaotic life, drowning in the unhappiness that lead her to where she is today. Opening Night is a deeply effective personal drama, allowing its audience to not only peak into the minds of these characters, but stew in emotional turmoil with them.
DECEMBER 8 - HUSBANDS (1970) - ANNIVERSARY SCREENING! Presented exactly 48 years after its initial release to the day! The lives of Gus, Harry and Archie (John Cassavetes, Ben Gazzara, Peter Falk) are deeply shaken when their friend Stuart suddenly dies from a heart attack. Confronted by their own mortality, the three friends slip into a shared midlife crisis, filled with drinking, dancing, singing and temptation. Husbands is a unflinching criticism of masculinity, never for a moment asking the audience to sympathize with the irresponsibility of the three men. DECEMBER 14 - THE KILLING OF A CHINESE BOOKIE (1976) - ORIGINAL 1976 EDIT
John Cassavetes takes his character-driven and pensive sensitivity into the world of film noir with The Killing of a Chinese Bookie. Starring Ben Gazzara as Cosmo Vitelli, a night-club owner who becomes involved in loan shark seediness so badly that he must commit a terrible crime or lose everything. Cassavetes presents a singular analysis of masculinity within the walls of the richly colourful settings, operating as a bewitching crime drama and an honest character study simultaneously.
DECEMBER 15 - A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE (1974) - 35MM PRESENTATION Closing out our retrospective is perhaps the most beloved work from John Cassavetes, his tremendously impactful portrait of a troubled housewife named Mabel. Gena Rowlands and Peter Falk star as the married couple at the helm of the story - two people deeply in love but unable to pull things together for each other and make their life together work. This film will be presented in glorious 35mm and is absolutely not too be missed!
