9:30am – 10:20am | Two Opposing Truths: A Dialectical Approach to Emotional Eating by Jeb Stuart Johnston
Self-sabotage, stress-eating, emotional-eating; we often encounter clients who can’t seem to achieve sustainable weight loss due to some variation of these behaviors. So why do so many people seem unable to change? And should we therefore just accept that truth?
A dialectic is a synthesis or integration of opposites. The main dialectic in Dialectical Behavior Therapy is that of the desire for change in opposition with the need for acceptance. In the nutritional sphere, we often see two opposing camps; one representing that of fat loss and another representing that weight-neutral counseling or body-acceptance. Yet the truth in lasting change lies somewhere in the middle. By utilizing both cognitive and mindfulness techniques, we can develop skills amongst our clients that empower them to accept the present while simultaneously embracing change.

4:00pm – 5:00pm | Building the Million Dollar Personal Training Business (or Gym) by Luke Carlson
For at least two decades, personal trainers and studio owners have succumbed to what best-selling author, Jim Collins calls, “Tyranny of the OR.” In the case of the fitness studio owner, we’ve incorrectly asserted that we can do work we are passionate about (fitness) OR we can make great money. Collins’ research suggests that great leaders and companies escape the tyranny of the OR and embrace the “Genius of the AND.” We can do work we are passionate about AND still make great money. It turns out, work we are passionate about and earning a great living are not mutually exclusive.
Personal training studio operators have dramatically underestimated the upside potential of the personal training business model. Much of the industry has placed an artificial ceiling on what’s possible and we’ve defaulted to these self-limiting beliefs. In fact, it’s possible to generate annual revenue of one million dollars in a very small footprint.
Of course, it isn’t easy. Building a million-dollar training studio takes work. But it isn’t overly complicated.
