Description
This summer, The Bentway presents Beyond Concrete, a series of public art, performances, parties, and conversations. Join us under the Gardiner to explore how Toronto’s unique urban nature and built environment can co-exist, collide, and collaborate.
The Bentway Animal Parade
Join a community parade that honours the resilient urban animals who live in relation to our highway and downtown core, with special guest Little Amal, a 12-foot-tall puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee, who has travelled across the world in search of her mother. Join Little Amal as she explores the Gardiner Expressway and the many animals that call this urban playground home, featuring delightful puppets and performances by Red Pepper Spectacle Arts. Presented with Luminato Festival Toronto.
About the Artists
Red Pepper Spectacle Arts is a non-profit, community arts organization that co-creates and facilitates multidisciplinary collaborative arts engagement cross-culturally, and primarily serving First Nations, Metis, and Inuit communities. Red Pepper works in partnership with social service agencies, community health and educational institutions, municipalities, band councils, neighbourhood residencies, and other arts partners, to provide arts programming towards social justice, equity in cultural arts production, representation and arts access.
The Walk Productions is a not-for-profit company created to present very large scale participatory public art that tries to face some of the world’s biggest challenges by dreaming big and acting boldly. Through their work, they bring disparate communities together to celebrate art and each other, to rethink the world and to try to inspire lasting change. In 2021 they produced The Walk across 11 countries and 5000 miles with an international team. In 2022 Little Amal went on "walks" in Poland, Ukraine, New York City, the UK and Amsterdam.
