Social Venture Partners Waterloo Region (SVPWR) offers Knowledge Bites, workshops that take high priority topics in the not-for-profit sector, break them down into sizeable 1-1.5 hour sessions, with experts in each field leading the presentation and Q&A session. Non-profits and charities have several requirements to meet in order to maintain their CRA status, one of which is maintaining good financial standing. SVP’s Knowledge Bite: Financials 101 will cover the fundamentals of financial literacy for those in the NFP sector. It will also address key compliance issues with CRA rules and provide insights for organizations considering transitioning to charitable status, including the financial regulations you need to understand and prepare for now. Led by Tim Sothern, FCPA, FCA, MBA, and Ryan Selves, CPA, CA, from BDO Canada, this session will be packed with valuable information you can apply in your day-to-day work at your NFP or charity. Come with your questions and Tim and Ryan will be happy to answer them for you. **Lunch will be provided for this session. Please feel free to arrive 15 minutes early to grab some food. If cost is a barrier, please email info@svpwr.org. Bios - Tim Sothern - Tim has over 30 years of public accounting experience with BDO in the Waterloo Region. He is a member of BDO’s National Policy Board and is also a the former leader for BDO’s Central Region Not-for-Profit Industry Team. As the engagement partner, Tim has the ultimate responsibility for the provision of services and will be your primary point of contact. He will be responsible for coordination, review and approval of all services provided and will proactively address client satisfaction. In 2011, Tim was awarded one of the highest honours in accounting, Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) designation, for his service to the profession and career and community achievements. He is very active as a volunteer in both the business and not-for-profit communities including as a member of the Board of Directors for Supportive Housing of Waterloo, and a former member and Chair of the Audit Committee of the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. Tim has also served as a mentor for the Leadership Waterloo Region “Youth on Board” program, is the Chair of the Board for Supportive Housing of Waterloo and is the past Chair of the Board for BDO Canada LLP. Ryan Selves - Ryan is a senior manager at BDO Canada in the Assurance and Accounting group, where he works closely with small and medium size businesses and not for profit organizations to help them achieve their short and long term goals. Ryan's client base is primarily in the manufacturing, distribution and not-for-profit sectors. Ryan began his professional career in 2013, when he joined BDO Canada for his first co-op term.
