Public Presentation, Film & Two Workshops - Sponsored by the Boise EcoVillage Project, the BSU Sustainability Club, and the Boise State Writing ProjectFree Public Event at the BSU Special Events CenterFriday, September 4th at 6 p.m.The presentation “Sustainable is Possible: Creating Low Carbon, High Quality Lives... Together” shows how we can live high quality lives while using only 10% of the resources of the average American. Q and A will follow the talk. The Film “Inhabit” will follow the presentationINHABIT explores the many environmental issues facing us today and examines solutions that are being applied using the ecological design process called 'Permaculture'. Permaculture is a design lens that uses the principles found in ecosystems to help shift our impact from destructive to regenerative. Focused mostly on the Northeastern and Midwestern regions of the United States, Inhabit provides an intimate look at permaculture peoples and practices ranging from rural, suburban, and urban landscapes. Half-Day Workshop: Starting a Sustainable CommunityXanadu Community Center, 5015 W Bond St., Boise, IdahoFriday, September 4th from 9 - 1Cooperation is a key element of sustainability, and a sense of community is critical for our well-being as humans. Many people feel drawn to a particular version of community: the residential intentional community. This workshop draws on years of knowledge from community founders, and Ma’ikwe’s own 18 years of cooperative living, including three community start-ups, to lay out the most important considerations for making a new community a success. Blending practical advice with opportunities for self-reflection, this workshop can help you set your feet on the right path for your group to thrive. Topics will include:
creating a good vision statement, what successful founders have in common, the relationship between decision-making, conflict resolution, and membership process, 15 spectrums that help define what kind of a community you are creating, social dynamics you need to know about, economic choices and their implication for sustainability and group cohesion, what you should-- and shouldn't-- freak out about, and key questions for making your community a sustainable one.Full-Day Workshop: Rethinking SustainabilityBSU Student Union Bldg, Lookout RoomSaturday, September 5th from 9 – 5What do you think of when you hear the word sustainability? Organic food, wind turbines, natural building and electric cars? Those things matter for sure, but real sustainability goes well beyond the ecological choices we make, and touches on social dynamics, economics, and our fundamental worldview. This class introduces the relationships between the four dimensions of sustainability, drawing on a curriculum developed by ecovillages all over the world. If we are going to really address issues like climate change, it is essential that we look more deeply at how we define sustainability and what we are willing to question, rethink, and re-envision about how we live our lives. About the workshop leader: Ma’ikwe Schaub Ludwig is a pioneering sustainability educator who heads up Ecovillage Education US, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Fellowship for Intentional Community. Her work integrates ecological, economic, social, political and personal approaches and technologies for a strongly holistic view of what real sustainability takes, and we expect the talk to have broad appeal across the disciplines. Ma'ikwe is a regular writer for Communities magazine and is the author of Passion as Big as a Planet: Evolving Eco- Activism in America. Ma’ikwe is a dynamic speaker, and she has been featured on TEDx in 2013 with her talk on sustainability.
