La Haine (The Hate) is one of the most striking and vital films to come out of France in the last 40 years. If you have not seen this film multiple times you are missing out on an outstanding, enriching piece of cinema.
Spanning 24 hours in the lives of three ethnically diverse friends from the Parisian projects, following violent riots that have decimated their neighbourhood. One of the trio, Vinz (Vincent Cassel), has found a police revolver during the riots and vows to kill a cop if their friend Abdel, who is intensive care after a police beating, dies.
From the off the film is like a ticking time bomb that you cannot take your eyes off. Brutally real performances and dialogue combine with stunning cinematography and an incredible soundtrack to make a true classic of its genre.
