About Rich
Limb Difference: Congenital
Type: Missing Left Arm, Below Elbow
Sport: Basketball, Snowboarding
Richard was born without his left arm, just below the elbow in
Phoenix, AZ. Throughout his life, he used sports as a way to fit in
despite his limb difference. From being an All-State football player to a
starter on a two-time state championship team in basketball, sports
were something that he connected with on all levels. Sports also allowed
Richard to share his story, faith, and mindset with others along his
journey.
After moving to Oregon to work for Nike, Richard found myself
missing the ability to talk to others about overcoming obstacles, so he
founded
AMP1 Basketball. Through AMP1, Richard has been able to meet thousands of people and other adaptive athletes.
In addition, Richard was involved with the US Amputee Soccer team
and played as their goalie. He competed in multiple international
matches and in three World Cup tournaments. “It’s hard to explain the
feeling of representing your country during the Star-Spangled Banner,
but it is one I will never forget,” says Coach Richard.
Bonus:
● Richard and his wife, Kate, have two children: a boy named Ryder, a
girl names Rudy and 3 dogs (two mini-wiener dogs and a Doberman)
● In the past year, Richard has donated over 200+ pairs of shoes from his collection; he still has over 400 pairs remaining!
“Being able to connect and coach the next generation of adaptive athletes at Nub Camp is such a powerful experience. It is hard to put into words. Camp is able to bring hope and inspiration to everyone involved, which is why I am so humbled to be a part of their program.” - Coach Richard
