Sophie Bancroft: The Songs Quartet with Louis Durra
A confident musical voice that is distinctly jazz-based, Sophie writes and performs with an inspirational folk expression, giving us hints of Kirsty McGee, Thea Gilmore, and the wit, sensuality and expressive minimalism of Peggy Lee. Following a collaboration between Bancroft and American pianist Louis Durra for the Made In Scotland showcase at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Songs Quartet emerged featuring Bancroft on guitar and voice, Durra on piano with Stuart Brown on drums and Tom Lyne on basses. Their resulting CD ‘Songs’ was listed in The Herald’s top 50 album releases of 2015. The quartet creates a refined contemporary take on Bancroft’s originals and unexpected interpretations of covers from Eryka Badu and Michael Franks to Steely Dan. Sophie’s original songs have been covered by jazz vocalists including Liane Carroll and collaborations with Glasgow based electronic band Spylab featured in hit American TV show ‘Six Feet Under’.
