Description
As integral members of their communities, the following films incorporate a child’s viewpoint in their narrative approach. The children at the centre of this program are virtuous storytellers, condensing epic tales about their cultural origins (Otomi: El inicio del mundo como lo conocemos) and magnifying facets of their daily lives (Las aventuras de Itzel y Sonia). Yet, instead of iterating stories, they are retold with the flair only a set of curious eyes, ears and minds can achieve.

MAYA LA ÚLTIMA DANZA
Director: Gabriela Badillo
Country: Mexico Year: Lenght: 2’30’’Genre: Animation
Synopsis: Short from the series “68 voces - 68 corazones”
…There was a conversation with my father that I keep within me: “Daughter, I often dream of your mother. She is always young when I see her, the years just don’t go by for her.” “And what does she say? I haven’t seen her in a long time.” “You’re now older than she is, that’s why you can’t see her. I’m thinking of going after her, I don’t want to be too old for your mother. She still likes me, in my dreams we take walks in different places, we remember all the dances we did together.” “You would really go with her? What about me?”. “You’ll stay here. I have planted in you the seed of the dances and you will make it multiply all around the world. We were only instruments so you could exist." “This is like the seed of life, it is necessary that its face be buried in the ground; it is necessary that it performs the death dance. If it succeeds, its sprouts will see the surface. It will grow in the form of a plant, it will be strong and it will bear fruits, it will always bear fruits because it learned to succeed before it was born. This is why you have to think that people that are gone, are not gone in vain, think about your kind and when the moment comes for you to go, you must be ready.” When my father lay down to rest that night, he never woke up. But I knew that he would be happy because he had gone to meet my mother. I created “the dance of death” and not knowing when my last day will come, I sing it until the words that come out of my mouth melt or when a strong wind extinguishes the sound of my voice.
TOJOLABAL EL TIGRE Y EL GRILLO
Director: Gabriela Badillo
Country: Mexico Year: 2016 Lenght: 1’05’’ Genre: Animation
Synopsis: Short from the series “68 voces - 68 corazones”
One day, while walking around the mountain, the tiger was startled by a loud noise. Scared, he looked around to find where the noise had come from and discovered a grasshopper resting underneath a leaf. The tiger, confident of his size and power, challenged the little insect to a fight and he calmly agreed. Each animal called its friends. The tiger had the lion, the coyote, the razorback and the wolf by his side; while the grasshopper called the wasps, mosquitos and bumblebees to join him. The tiger and its friends were overconfident about winning; however, they ran away as fast as their enemies stung them all over. That’s how those big animals were defeated by the grasshopper and its small friends. That’s how Tojolabales tell it.
