Description
The Sweat Stain Collective will use physical literacy to discuss the social realities of youth in Scarborough. The workshop focus on exploring the idea of consent specific to street harassment through physical literacy (e.g. situational awareness and non-verbal/verbal communication). Participants get to participate in a few beginner sport drills as well as playing a game basketball to explore these topics. By applying skills used when being physically active to real-life situations, the goal of this workshop is to highlight to students what physical literacy is.
This workshop is catered to youth.
About the Facilitators

Veronica is an artist-educator based in the working class and racialized community of Scarborough. She is recently earned a Master of Education from the University of Toronto and a Bachelors of Education with a specialization in community arts from Queen’s University. Veronica began weight training and martial-arts training (Krav Maga) because of her own experience of street harassment as well as witnessing other women having to deal with street harassment. Veronica is interested in collectively creating spaces for racialized and working class women to organize politically through the vehicle of health and fitness.
Alex Cahuas has been involved in the fitness and health industry for four years and has established himself with many major players. Being mentored by Bryan Devonish and Master Trainer Kennedy Lodato, Alex had the opportunity to join the Nike Sparq team while learning the philosophies of Twist Sport Conditioning and COREFX Functional Training. With this knowledge Alex began applying himself to his present endeavour of I Can Be Fit. Alex has been able to create his own philosophies and training style, combining his love for mental health and community work with his passion for fitness. In obtaining his Bachelors of Education and his Masters of Social Work Alex looks to connect physical literacy with themes surrounding: violence, discrimination, mental health, colonialism, healthy relationships and community building. By finding alternatives to the classroom settings Alex hopes to facilitate critical pedagogy through accessible health development.
