Moten, Macalester CollegeHjemkomst CenterSaturday, February 23 | 3:00PM - 4:30PMPlease join us on Saturday, February 23, as we host Professor Crystal M. Moten for a free lecture in celebration of Black History Month. Dr. Moten's lecture will examine the lives of African Americans, especially
women, who migrated to the Midwest after World War II, paying special
attention to their experiences, struggles, and acts of everyday
resistance. Through an analysis of their involvement
in movements for civil rights, gender equality and welfare rights, the
lecture will also illuminate the challenges and possibilities of
community engaged public history.

Crystal M. Moten is
an Assistant Professor of African American History at Macalester
College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. A Chicago native, she received an AB
from Washington University in Saint Louis in Anthropology and African
and African American
Studies, as well as an MA in Afro-American Studies and a PHD in History
from the University of Wisconsin Madison. Before Macalester, she was an
Assistant Professor of History at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA. Her
research interests focus on the intersection
of race, class, and gender and specifically she writes about black
women’s economic activism in civil rights era urban Midwest. Her work
has appeared in the
Journal of Civil and Human Rights and a special issue of Souls focusing on the Black
women’s work, culture, and politics. She has peer reviewed book chapters forthcoming in
The Strange Careers of Jim Crow North (NYU Press) and Religion and Black Feminist Intellectuals. Additionally, her forthcoming book is entitled This
Woman’s Work: Black Women’s Intellectual and Economic Activism in Postwar Milwaukee
