Featuring a Post-Screening Conversation with Don Letts & REBEL DREAD producer Phil Hunt
Join GRAMMY-winning filmmaker, DJ, musician, and cultural commentator Don Letts and REBEL DREAD producer Phil Hunt at The GRAMMY Museum for the captivating film’s west coast theatrical premiere, followed by a post-screening conversation with Letts and Hunt moderated by music journalist and author Chris Morris.
Celebrating one of popular music and film’s most brilliant and benevolent luminaries, Bohemia Media’s new feature documentary REBEL DREAD explores the life and creative work of Don Letts. For decades, Letts has been at the center of the action, uniting creative scenes and people as a trailblazing artist and documentarian across punk rock, reggae, rap/hip-hop, street art, music filmmaking, and beyond. As a countercultural lightning rod for nearly five decades, he has played a significant role in propelling some of the world’s most inventive and influential avant garde music, art and film into exciting new terrain.
REBEL DREAD dives into Don Letts’ life and work with a riveting narrative illustrated by stunning visuals from Letts’ and others’ film and photo archives. The 87-minute film also includes insightful, inspiring, and often hilarious commentary from Letts and from some of his friends and creative collaborators, including Mick Jones, John Lydon, Jeannette Lee, Massive Attack’s Daddy G, Greg Roberts, Leo Williams, Vivien Goldman, Dennis Bovell, Letts’ brother Desmond Coy, and others.
Directed by William E. Badgley and produced by Phil Hunt and Mark Vennis, REBEL DREAD debuts November 1 for streaming rental and purchase on major North American home entertainment platforms via Alliance Entertainment.
SYNOPSIS
REBEL DREAD is the story of Don Letts, a first-generation British-born Black filmmaker, DJ, musician, and cultural commentator. The film frames Don’s story with the 1968 Enoch Powell ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech and the 2018 ‘hostile environment’ immigration policy.
The film covers Don’s relationship with the nascent punk scene of the 1970s and 80s – how rastas and punks found a common bond, both outside of the mainstream, and how Don introduced reggae to the punks, influencing a whole generation of rock acts. Don was part of the inner circle of The Clash and Johnny Rotten. He later formed Big Audio Dynamite with Mick Jones, and made music that incorporated dance, reggae, rap, film samples and rock n roll.
After directing iconic music videos including “London Calling”, “Chain Gang”, and “Pass the Dutchie”, Don became an award-winning director of feature films, including his GRAMMY-winning The Clash: Westway to the World, Dancehall Queen, and One Love, starring Idris Elba. He is now a leading cultural commentator and well-known voice on BBC Radio 6.
