Red Bull Music Festival Presents ComposeLA
Ukrainian Culture Center
4315 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90029, USA
Filmmaker Alima Lee, Composer Bapari (Arielle Baptiste), and Theorist Mandy Harris Williams collaborate to develop a visual and sonic landscape that critically evaluates the day to day lived attempt at making one’s own black life matter. Their film is an existential reconnaissance yielding imagery from the LA landscape and quotidian black livelihood, glamorizing in as much as it is documenting. Lee’s filmmaking style ascribes old and new images and technologies to deconstruct black screen history and re appropriate it in service as a new vocabulary for black people, with an emphasis on black femmes, and with special emphasis on queer black femmes. Williams' prose/poetry acts as the iteration of this aforementioned vocabulary, giving voice to the frustration and triumph of black emotional effort at sound spiritual and corporeal existing. Bapari performs a live score alongside the film -- an improvisation that embodies the spirit of an underground (black) electronic music culture, as it responds to popular imagery and innovates new presentations of self and sound.
Alima Lee is a filmmaker, DJ, and curator. Bapari (Arielle Baptiste) AKA Sensei Noir is a queer-based femme and Los Angeles-based multi-genre producer, DJ, and radio host.
