The Assembly Dance will present an evening-length improvisation structure for sound and movement on September 21, 2017 at Costa Mesa’s 10,000 sq. ft. Westside Museum. Scored by Long Beach choreographers Megan Guise and Jobel Medina in collaboration with musicians Zaq Kenefick and Jeff Livingstone, the performance marks the company’s seventh season to date. The framework will allow a cast of five additional OC- and LA-based dancers to make decisions as the evening unfolds, giving audience members a closer look at the innate spontaneity, possibility and eloquence of contemporary dance. Audience members can choose whether to view the performance from the ground floor or mezzanine, and can partake of small plates and drink sold by The Boathouse Collective.
Dance artists Haihua Chiang, Lenin Fernandez, Hannah Frankel, and co-founder/creative director Lara Wilson will return to The Assembly as performers in 'RECESS.' Guise and dance artist Joey Navarrete will join the company for the first time. The Assembly creates unique events that appeal as equally to dance-lovers as those who've never experienced it before.
‘RECESS’ strives not to take itself too seriously: the work has been conceived as a playground, with set rules and separate sections giving it structure but not predetermined form. Ultimately, the dancers’ choices will inform and shape the work as it is performed. The prompt to “have fun and not take yourself too seriously” has been extended to the group’s collaborators as well: San Francisco-based visual artist Kristen Rieke Morabito, founding costume designer Hannah Jenkinson, and OC-based Angelina Maria Ortiz of Dustë Goods.
Due to venue restrictions and the full bar on premises, this event will be 21+. Thank you for understanding!
