People, energy or space : what is more important to drive design?Hurley Palmer Flatt240 Blackfriars Road, London, SE1 8NWWhat is it that drives design? We have selected three critical items that help shape the buildings we design:Space: the ever pressing challenge of maximising square meterage, be it to provide ample accommodation or to maximise returns on investment;People: providing the most ‘comfortable’ environment, one that enhances senses and allows occupiers to be more productive in whatever they are doing.Energy: the drive to reduce energy consumption and carbon emission, heightened by the tightening of regulations or by clients’ CSR aspirationsBut which of these is more important? Most often there are clear champions for each of these areas: developers wanting more space, architects wanting the most of people experience and sustainability consultants pushing for the energy performance. With a short presentation of work we have been undertaking in recent projects in the three areas, we wish to discuss perceived conflicts and possible synergies between the three aspects. We believe an optimum balance can be achieved and it is always intrinsically related to each project, but how often is this reached?Join the discussion at our new offices at 240 Blackfriars Road!
