OF GLITCHES AND MACHINES features contemporary works for solo piano, electronics and multi-media, performed by Stephanie Chua and Adam Sherkin. Taking inspiration from the hum of vacuum cleaners to the malfunction of video tape, this programme showcases virtuosic piano writing against the backdrop of 21st Century life.
Mason Bates’ White Lies for Lomax uses blues and stride-piano fragments in an homage to early anonymous blues musicians. Nico Muhly’s Drones & Piano began as an exercise for developing harmonic ideas over a static (drone) structure, much like “singing along with one’s vacuum cleaner.” Nicole Lizée’s Hitchcock Etudes is immediately iconic keyboard music, combining notated glitch and video with micro-moments from Hitchcock middle-period films. Rounding out the programme: Adam Sherkin’s Tagish Fires (etudes) and The Mild Hunt.
