Description
Completed in 2011, this is one of the first homes in Canada to follow the PassivHaus design approach. A conservation based concept, Passive House aims to deliver large reductions (up to 80% compared with current building code) in the energy used for heating and cooling. This is achieved by following an integrated design concept that combines the following principles: solar orientation that optimizes window sizing and placement, simple building geometry, thermal bridge-free construction, high levels of insulation throughout, ultra-low levels of air leakage, triple glazed windows with orientation specific coatings, overhangs that optimize summer shading, and whole house ventilation with heat recovery.
This retrofit increased living space by 35 percent while maintaining the same footprint and much of the original building. The desire to minimize the impact of height on the neighbouring bungalows was also taken into consideration, resulting in a storey and a half design. Mature vegetation was preserved and reused in the new landscape plan.
The robust thermal enclosure combined with a simple mechanical system (a few baseboard heaters and an air-source heat pump for heating and cooling) has yielded very high comfort levels in all four seasons. Adjusted for the difference in floor area, the house now uses about 80 percent less energy to heat.
