Description
Steve Guthrie
Steve joined the Belmont College of Theology and Christian Ministry in August of 2005, after teaching for five years at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. During his time in Scotland, he was on the faculty of the Institute for Theology, Imagination and the Arts, and then came to Belmont to help launch a new program in Religion and the Arts. He earned an undergraduate degree in Music Theory from the University of Michigan, and worked for several years as a musician before becoming disoriented on the way to a gig and stumbling into the world of academic theology. Steve is the author of Creator Spirit, the co-editor of Resonant Witness alongside Jeremy Begbie, as well as myriad book chapters and essays across the worlds of theology and art. In his spare time, he enjoys playing his Fender Rhodes, eating pizza, or simply meditating on the goodness of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is married to Julie and has four extraordinarily clever and impossibly good-looking children.
The Non-Competitive Creator:
Thinking About the Relationship Between God’s Making and Our Own
Like most Christians, I pray for God’s help in my creative work – when I am writing an article, for instance, or giving a talk. But, if God were to answer those prayers, what would that answer look like? Does God do everything while I just get out of the way? Does God do half the work and leave the other half to me (maybe writing the odd numbered pages and leaving me to write the evens)? Or did God just give me a dollop of something called “talent” or “ability” at the beginning of my life, and now it’s up to me to make something out of it? In short, who’s hand “holds the pen”? How should we think about the relationship between God’s creating, and our own?
This talk, which was the keynote address at a recent National Convention of the Lilly Network of Church-related Colleges and Universities, will offer a picture of making that leaves room for both God’s activity and our own.
