NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY WITH FRANK HALLAM DAY IN LOS ANGELES
Overview:
Join The Leica Akademie USA as we introduce students to the world of night photography in Los Angeles with award-winning photographer Frank Hallam Day.
This workshop is timed to coincide with an exhibit of Frank's work at the Leica Gallery LA. We will begin with an in-studio session with Frank to see examples of his nighttime projects, one of which won the Leica Oskar Barnack Prize in 2012. Following the lecturem covering both the creative and technical considerations of night photography, we will explore the cityscape of L.A.
Shooting at night opens up a whole new realm of creative expression. This two day workshop is designed to give you the fundamentals needed to be successful at this type of photography.
More than just a theoretical exercise this program will head into the city at night providing a hands-on opportunity to learn about the special requirements and techniques of nighttime urban photography, including adding your own light.
After an full evening of shooting as a group and independently, we will gather together on Sunday for a review of each students work and a look at the post processing options for night images.
Students are welcome to use any camera brand. We will have access to a selection Leica cameras including the newest member of the family, the versatile Leica SL.
Topics covered:
Approaches to photographing at night.
Understating the exposure triangle - ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed.
Technical choices, choosing the right equipment for the job.
Painting with light.
Color temperature of light sources and controlling white balance.
Editing and Retouching process.
Agenda:
This two day workshop will begin at 1:00 p.m. on July 23rd at the Leica Store in Los Angeles. Following an introduction to night photography and Frank's approach, we will take a break at 3:30 p.m. and then reconvene from 7:30pm-9:30 p.m. for our first location. A list of the best night photography locations in L.A will be provided for additional shooting beyond 9:30 p.m.
Sunday's class will start at 1:00 p.m and wrap up at 4:30 p.m. We will resume back at The Leica Store Los Angeles for the most important part of class, the review. Students will come to class prepared with a selection from Saturday night.
Who should take this workshop?
Students should have a basic understating of shutter speed, ISO
and aperture. This program is designed to set you up for success in making impressive
images of the city at night. If you are interested in finding the beauty in everyday and discovering a new way of looking at photography, this is the program for you.
Attendance is strictly limited to 12 participants, so be sure to sign up at your earliest opportunity.
Instructor:
Frank Hallam Day is a fine art photographer in Washington. He has taught
photography at the Smithsonian Institution in other local programs. His
work is in numerous museum and private collections in the United States
and abroad, including the State Museum of Berlin, the Baltimore Museum
of Art, the Portland Art Museum, the San Diego Museum of Photographic
Arts and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. His artistic interests revolve
around the themes of culture and history, and humanity’s footprint on
the natural world. Recent projects include the erasure of personal and
cultural memory in East Berlin, and on the impact of globalization on
African identity. He was a winner of the prestigious Leica Oskar Barnack
Prize in 2012 and the Bader Prize in 2006, and was a finalist both for
the Sondheim Prize in 2007, the Sony Prize in 2010, the Voies Off Prize
at Arles in 2010, and has received several grants from the District of
Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities. He was Artist in
Residence at Acadia National Park in 2007, and was U.S. Cultural Envoy
to Ethiopia in 2008. He has juried and curated numerous photography
shows and competitions in the Washington area. He also writes on
photography for Photo Review.
